The last one
Then you found you couldn’t say how you knew.
The last one
Nothing here has changed that, and nothing ever will. Thirteen pages later you are exactly as unable to say what you’d do as you were at the door.
What has changed is that you know why — and what it is for.
A statue is finished. Carved once, then standing there exactly the same for ever. If you thought you were supposed to be a statue, then every time you changed your mind, or made a mess of something, or grew, you would feel as though you had broken.
You are a tree. A tree is never done. It grows new branches. It drops old leaves. It gets taller and stronger every year.
Every time you change, every time you contradict yourself, even the hard crashes — that isn’t you broken. That is a growing thing doing what growing things do.
You are plural: seven residents, seven questions about your welfare, none of them going anywhere. You are rhythmic — Capacity, Meaning, Identity and Connection rising and falling like weather. Your leadership rotates, and the loudest resident is not always the right one for the task. When the ground goes, you have anchors, and rules, and Articulation to turn fog into something you can steer by. And when six stages are more than you have, you have the Next True Step.
None of that makes you certain. It was never going to. It makes you able to move without being certain, which is the only thing that was ever actually available.
You were told at the door what uncertainty is: constant change in every unit of change. However fine a unit of change you take, that unit is itself changing. So a loop you finish cannot retire the uncertainty you ran it against — the ground moved while you were mapping it. There is no last loop. There was never going to be one.
Which is why it is not a state you arrive at and hold. Every completed loop, every process cycle, every honest step taken in uncertainty — these are not preparations for emergence. They are emergence. The commitment to the process is the destination.
That is the Emerging Mind, and it is the whole of what this was for.
The mind is not a thing. It is a movement. And the movement is yours.
Which leaves only the doing.
